SUICIDE OF JOHN A. HILL

The sad news of the suicide of John A. Hill, a former resident of Blairstown, at his home in Orange, by taking a dose of carbolic acid, was received on Thursday. The body was brought to the home of Mrs. Hill's parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. V. Raub, near Vail, on Friday evening and there the funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. R. Johns. The interment was made in the Cedar Ridge Cemetery. No cause for the taking of his life can be found. Mr. Hill and family had been in the vicinity of Blairstown on a visit the early part of August and he then appeared to be in the best of health and spirits. Mrs. Hill and the children have the sympathy of the community in their peculiarly sad affliction.

The Newark News gives the following particulars of the suicide: "In a fit of despondency John A. Hill committed suicide early Thursday morning at his home, 203 High Street, Orange, by taking carbolic acid. He was found dying by his wife, but nothing could be done for his assistance, although medical aid was immediately summoned.

Mr. Hill was formerly in business as a grocer at High street and Lakeside avenue, Orange, but sold out the business to his brother-in-law, A. E. Raub, at whose house he was living when he took his life. After selling out his Orange store, Mr. Hill engaged in a similar enterprise in Newark, but disposed of his store a month ago. Since that time he had been working for the North Jersey Street Railway Company as a motorman on the West Orange division of the company's line.

Wednesday he remarked to Mr. Raub that the work of motorman was not particular congenial, and he thought he would go to Warren County and engage in the lumber business with his brother.

Mrs. Hill's health had not been very good of late, and a short time ago she contracted blood poisoning. Mr. Hill also was not well and worry over these things had affected him so that he was unable to sleep well. He had worried over the fact that he had not made as much money as he thought he ought to do in business, although it is said he had not lost money in his ventures.

About four o'clock this morning Mr. Hill arose and left his room, and when he did not return in an hour Mrs. Hill went to look for him. She found her husband in another apartment, unconscious. By his side was a good-sized bottle which had contained a solution of carbolic acid. On the bottle was the label of the drug store of C. P. Noll, on Central avenue, Newark. There was about a half an ounce of the solution left in the bottle. The liquid had been purchased some time ago for the use of Mrs. Hill, who bathed her hand with it in order to allay the blood poisoning.

Although it seemed as though nothing could be done for Mr. Hill, Dr. M. Herbert Simmons was summoned, but the man was nearly dead when the physician arrived. Dr. Simmons said the solution was so weak that Mr. Hill must have taken a great deal of it in order to cause death.

Besides his wife, the dead man is survived by three children. He was about forty-two years old. The body will be taken to Warren County tomorrow for interment."
