August 17, 1998
John R. Wildrick, 87, educator and community leader, died Sunday morning at his summer cottage near Marshalls Creek. He was the husband of Dorothy (Linton) Wildrick to whom he had been married for 56 years.
Born on August 11, 1911, in Portland, he was the son of John Read and Carrie (Raub) Wildrick. He lived in Portland for 72 years and was an endless source of stories about Portland in the early 1900's, which he experienced from the advantage of his father's newspaper and printing office.
He graduated from East Stroudsburg State Teachers College in 1933 and then earned his master's and doctorate in education from New York University. As part of his doctoral thesis he wrote A Manual of Local Government in Monroe County, Pennsylvania, which was used as the ninth grade civics text in Monroe County schools for more than a decade.
He started his career in 1934 as an educator teaching at the Portland Elementary School. Starting in 1940 he taught in the East Stroudsburg junior high school. He returned to Portland as principal for two years until he joined the faculty at East Stroudsburg State Teachers College.
He held numerous positions at the college, including Director of Student Teaching and Placement, Dean of Administration, and retired as Vice President of Administration in 1974. He was active in educational organizations including president of the local chapter of the Pennsylvania State Education Association as well as the Pennsylvania Student Teachers Association.
He served as president of the Stroudsburg Kiwanis Club and was active in Portland politics, serving on borough council for many years.
Following his retirement he and his wife spent several winters in Hawaii and traveled extensively throughout the world.
In 1983 they moved to Penney Farms Retirement Community in Florida where he was active in community affairs.
In addition to his wife he is survived by two sons, John Terence of West Chester and Linton of Tumwater, Washington; a daughter, Donna Pitz of Paoli; seven grandchildren, Sarah and Emily Wildrick of West Chester, Kelly, John and Kimberly of Tumwater, Washington, and Scott, Kathryn, and Cody Pitz of Paoli.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 22 at 10:30 a.m. at the Portland United Methodist Church with the Rev. Charles Marker and the Rev. Harold Schieck officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Lehigh Valley Hospice, 1273 N. Ninth Street, Stroudsburg, PA 18360.
